Deep Sleeper

I am a really deep sleeper. If I am suddenly awoken out of a deep sleep, especially if I am dreaming, I will feel sick. A little nauseous in fact. I feel hot as if I have a fever, a little headache, and my stomach will feel turned upside-down. I bring this up because we are woken up a few times a night by the intense crying of a 10-month old baby. Man, Koa can really eat. It’s my job to stumble out of bed, put my glasses on, go downstairs and prepare a bottle of formula. Then I return to the bedroom, where I hand off the duties to Mariko, who holds the bottle. Sometimes I change Koa’s diaper. When I am done, I climb back into bed, pull the covers over me, and shut my eyes. That particular moment actually feels awesome. As I drift off to sleep again, I am in such a state of bliss that the wail of the 20 lb. banshee sounds as soothing as an angel’s lullabye.
