Kuitan (喰いタン)

Yesterday I spent much of the day watching Kuitan (喰いタン, 2006), which is a lighthearted detective dorama set in Yokohama. Kuitan is actually the nickname of the main character, played by Go Morita 森田剛 of V6), who isn’t too bright, but has a good heart, Idezumi Kyoko (Ichikawa Mikako 市川実日子), who takes care of the business-side of the Agency and is working to improve her cooking (this helps out in many of the cases), and a young schoolboy named Kindaichi (Suga Kenta 須賀健太), who is sort of adopted into the Agency.

Each episode is basically a separate case, and the relationships grow throughout the series. Nothing is too deep, however, and there isn’t any real romance to speak of. It’s just silly fun and sometimes over-the-top wacky. Kuitan has a pair of metal hashi that he keeps in his jacket pocket, and he uses these both at dinner time, and as weapons to fight crooks. But he’s not some invincible hero, but rather kind of bumbling and clumsy at times. But he’s also wise and smart and everyone likes him.

Of course any good dorama needs its share of good looking women (and men, I guess), and two of Kuitan’s regular characters are really cute. First, the above-mentioned Ichikawa Mikako is sort of the hip, blue-collar worker girl, and she has a really interesting face. I think she kind of reminds me of Drew Barrymore. The other woman is the police inspector Ogata Momo played by Kyono Kotomi 京野ことみ, and she is a more “classic” beauty. And for the girls, both Higashiyama and Morita are from Johnny’s, so I guess they are pretty popular. I actually enjoy Morita’s character in this dorama. The only other time I saw him act was in Lunch Queen, where he was a totally despicable and violent a-hole. It’s nice to see him as a good guy.

Anyways, I finished Kuitan 1 and started on Kuitan 2, which picks up right where the first one left off. It’s good to see all the main characters back in season 2!

Nice Parking

That’s my little car on the left. Funny thing, the SUV wasn’t even new. Just someone too lazy to take the time to park correctly. (photo taken at my parking garage with my RAZR)

Dasai Dora

Mariko said that her and her friends were discussing why Dora is so dasai (uncool), while her cousin Diego is not. They came to the conclusion that it was her bowl haircut. I have to agree that the haircut is a contributing factor, but I wouldn’t stop there. Her plain shorts are devoid of any kind of stitching or pockets, and look like those cheap polyester-type shorts that are usually stained in real life with cereal, juice, or cheetos. The t-shirt she wears is similarly dasai, but also too short. You can see her belly hanging out most of the time. Diego, on the other hand, has a nice stylish haircut, and is decked out with explorer-type clothes. I think Dora needs an update. Come to think of it, even when she is “Princess” Dora, she’s still pretty dasai. Yes… I guess it’s really all about her hairdo.

congratulations mkusunok!

In 95-96, I worked for the Computer and Informations Services department at the Anderson School at UCLA. One of the people with whom I worked closely every day was Mike Kusunoki. Although I was (and still am, go figure) a few years older than him, he sort of took me under his wing when I began doing technical support. He already had that part of his career pretty much wired. He could use FastLynx to transfer files off of a dying computer to a healthy one like no one else!

Outside of work, Mike and I and the rest of the ACS bunch had lots of fun. After-work trips to Ramen-ya and Hurry Curry were always great. Mike and I also used to run together around the perimeter of campus, which was awesome. I still bug him about running, since he hasn’t in a while! But then he will bring up the time that I was a little tipsy in Westwood and walked into a pole and then almost got in a fight with some dude. Good times, as the kids say!

Well, that was long ago, but Mike has been at hard at work at Anderson ever since. His career has been going up and up, and he even attended and graduated from Anderson as a student in the FEMBA program. Yesterday I received an email from him. Mike is now CIO and Director of Anderson Computing and Information Services. I am so stoked for him! Mike is one of those guys who is super serious about his work, and totally dependable. This promotion is certainly well-deserved. Congratulations Mike!
